WSP-K Kasipul Kabondo Constituency

WSP-K induction Workshop - Kasipul Kabondo ConstituencyKasipul Kabondo Constituency is one of the two constituencies in Rachuonyo District, Nyanza Province. In this area it was brought to light how women had been given limited spaces in leadership at the local level. There were about five women leaders in the entire region. It was brought out that women were not entrusted with leadership when it came to matters of government representation but were given leadership in churches.

This being in contrary with the WSP-K objectives of seeing more women in leadership positions especially political positions both locally and at a national level, led to the WSP-K induction workshop in Kasipul Kabondo constituency at great ladies hall Nyadendi hotel on 18th  January, 2010.

The constituency convener and former Councilor Madam Benta challenged women to come out and fight for their rights. She also challenged men to be supportive to their wives.  It came to light that women had been silent when it comes to leadership.

This further brought up the discussion on causes of women’s poor representation and ways of promoting women participation in leadership positions. These  included poor attitude of women both amongst themselves and of men towards women, lack of self belief and confidence, high level of poverty and violence against women.

Some of the ways highlighted to promote leadership included the changing of attitudes by both men and women, mobilizing the women since they were the majority in the region, and also encouraging the government to implement policies that gear towards closing of the gender parity gap as well as reforming the electoral sector. It was sensitized that constituents had to be enlightened on civil education.

The workshop was a success as the mobilized participants represented all categories. At the end of the workshop they were seen to buy some the teachings by acknowledging that women can do more than the historical roles defined for them. They challenged women to come out in numbers for the leadership posts and they would vote for them.

The function was graced by Nelson Muma representing the DO, Mr Yongo, Chief  Kojwak location and Mr Joseph Ndege chief Ramba location. Also in attendance were Mayor of Oyugis county council Mr Evans Omondi  and Cllr .John Opiyo.
