WSP-K in Eldoret South Constituency

Participants at WSP-K Workshop - Eldoret Eldoret South constituency is one of the rare constituencies in Kenya because they have been in the forefront of demonstrating that women too can be leaders, as there incumbent Member of Parliament is a woman.

This time the Women Shadow Parliament- Kenya (WSP-K) was at the Emitik Lodge on 25th January 2010 in Eldoret South to conduct a workshop on gender and governance with an emphasis on women leadership. The WSP-K director congratulated the constituents on the choice of a woman  leader and still went ahead to give comparison between Kenya and the other East African countries where it came out clearly that Kenya is still behind when it comes to empowering women in to taking leadership positions.

She further urged the constituents to maintain having women leaders and requested that that if they were not satisfied with the work done by the current woman Member of Parliament, then they should only if a must replace her with another woman.

The facilitator explained that the program was one that was seeking to create a uniform platform for both genders when it comes to competing for leadership positions.

He also reminded participants not to focus their attention only to politics when the issues of leadership are mentioned. Leadership is practiced in many levels and areas for example, provincial administration officers, leadership in churches, head of institutions including schools and CDF committee members among others.

Majority of the participants at the end of the workshop acknowledged that women can be better leaders if given chance. They agreed that men had their chance but failed so it’s high time they also allow women to come on board and bring their ideas too. They were also in agreement that some of the historical cultural practices have been passed by time for example, giving higher priority to male child when it comes to educating them which is a factor that has greatly disadvantaged women.

The workshop ended on a positive note with the District Officer Mr. Papa, promising to support all platforms in the region that aimed at promoting more women vying for leadership positions. He was categorical about fighting the injustices that women have suffered in their quest to seeking the same.
