Godliver Omondi is a disabled woman on a wheel chair but to her that is just a condition and has nothing to do with leadership qualities. She has been a leader in the disabled movements and has been fighting for the rights of the people living with disabilities. “I believe that to be able to fight for the rights of the disabled people you have to be aggressive, you must be focused and have issues at hand that you want to address. People living with disability have been depending on others for finances, and even for something as simple as movement around,” she said. 

Godliver believes that she is in the position to access the youths and the women with disabilities. “Women play a big role in the family and the community at large and it pains me when I see both able and disabled women, house wives and mothers having difficulties in accessing essential services. They have to go through someone who connects them to someone .I would like to have a situation where women go directly to the service providers and save a lot of time and money,” she explained. 

According to Godliver, she understand these issues and has been a victim herself and so she is in the best position to become the Woman Representative, kakamega county. “When policies are not friendly you can not force the policy makers so change them as a person. You must have a position within and assist from there,” she  added. 

Mrs Omondi is  saddened by the way ancestral lands are being distributed out in kakamega county. she is however optimistic that the new constitution will solve some of these problems. She is happy that women are already either inheriting or being given land  by their parents. 

They are also being listened to when it comes to selling land. And their opinion is being sought. “People are appreciating change and apart from the illegal land transactions being done in big offices between lawyers, women have moved many steps ahead,” she said. 

This  very kind mother of three children is also taking care of three orphans. Her biggest problem right now is the finances. “You can not run a campaign and lobbying without the finances, you have to move around, print and distribute posters and the communication This is a general women problem, most women are poor. If I had enough money I would have been an independent candidate with my own party. 

She will be contesting through the Orange Democratic Movement party ticket. “Most politicians are also into petty politics that divide people and hinder development.,” she said adding that people need someone who brings everyone on board, initiate development programmes, care for the disadvantaged people in the community and promote equality as stated in the constitution. 

She also thinks that the political grounds have not been fair for the women. she has experienced how men can be violent at women. “Men are rich and they can pull resources to facilitate their campaigns unlike women. most of them are also involved in  unlawful practices like buying votes during elections and influencing the results,” she said. 

Mrs Omondi believes that  men don’t give a listening ear, they are voted in and then they disappear. “I wish the government could have also given consideration to people living with disabilities when it comes to pricing of goods. most disabled people are poor, they do not have a stable means of income and most of them are involved in small businesses that bring very little profit. A very good number are also beggars or dependants and so it is only fair that they are given some consideration when  pricing is done especially when  buying some essential commodities,” she said . 

Mrs Omondi also believes that women are not their own enemies as people like to put it. it is just that they have been misled by the male figures in their lives for various reasons. she however believes women know better now because a good number though not all have read the constitution and will decide from the knowledgeable point of view. 

“In the past women only supported their fellow women by word of mouth but did not vote, times have changed and the future looks bright,” she said. Some women however, according to Mrs . Omondi  have not accepted change, especially in the remote parts of the village. They are being bought without thinking and she thinks it is high time women became proactive. 

“I feel very sad when I see women bought with bananas to influence their voting. that is a sign that something is seriously wrong somewhere and that is what I am trying to solve,” she said. She is also impressed with the youths in her county, they are changing, and embracing peace. Being the Treasurer of the County Peace committee she has seen this change grow step by step. Though it is happening at a slow pace she believes that it will be impressive very soon. 

Mrs. Omondi has been receiving support from the grounds and she believes that it is because of her hard work. “In leadership and politics in particular, you should prove yourself before you present yourself to the public. I believe that people trust me because I have always addressed them in public functions, on local radio when advising women and youth and tackling general problems affecting my community. By now they know that I can deliver given a chance,” she explained. 

She however hopes not limit herself to disabled people because the community is mixed, there are more able people than those living with disability. Godliver is the National Chair United Disabled Persons of Kenya (UDPK) and in that capacity she has been very vocal about the rights of the people living with disability. 

I believe that my time has come to  be the servant of the people and I am ready to serve them. I  already have the will ,what was missing was the resources and I believe this office will give me all the resources that I need to make people live a better life” those are her closing quotes.
