A report by the United Nations shows that poor nutrition was the key cause of more than a third of deaths among children under the age of five. It names Kenya among countries that account for 97 per cent of maternal and child deaths globally.
“Tracking progress in maternal, newborn and child survival: Countdown to 2015 - The 2008 Report,” launched at the second Countdown to 2015 Conference held in Cape Town, South Africa, from April 17 to 19, with the 118th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly, cites a number of areas that have not been addressed in relation to the health of pregnant mothers and children bellow five years.
The report further cites 38 per cent of countries under study had made insufficient progress in reducing child mortality. The report monitors coverage of priority interventions to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) for reduction of maternal and child mortality. It aimed to report on 68 countries which have 97% of maternal and child deaths worldwide, and on 22 interventions that have been proven to improve maternal, newborn, and child survival.
